Holiday Chat 2013 Decorations & Gift Book Guide

$

0

I had all of these grand plans to do a number of holiday-themed videos on the Daily Connoisseur this year and then, lo and behold, the holidays crept up quicker than I anticipated! I must have been distracted working on the second book, which I am happy to report, was just turned in to my editor, Trish Todd, at Simon & Schuster. Woo hoo!

So this week's video, Holiday Chat, discusses two topics to make up for lost time. First we talk about high and low budget decorating. I show you my citrus fruit ornaments that I did a tutorial on last year, and introduce you to my favorite decoration, my Kay Burkart Santa Claus... a true work of art!

**Update- Many people have asked where I purchased my Kay Burkart Santa. I purchased him locally from Stephanie Grace Designs in Santa Monica.

The video also gives you my top gift book recommendations. I love receiving books as presents and you are sure to find something for everyone on my list.

Books mentioned in the video are:

♦︎Downton Tabby by Chris Kelly (This book is SO FUNNY. It would make a perfect stocking stuffer.)

♦︎The Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman (and illustrated by Lessons from Madame Chic artist, Virginia Johnson.)

♦︎A Life of Barbara Stanwyck Steel True: 1907-1940 by Victoria Wilson (Perfect for anyone who loves the Golden Age of Hollywood.)

♦︎The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith (One of the most delightful series of books ever written, in my humble opinion.)

♦︎The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer (This is the next book club selection for the Daily Connoisseur, so I want you to read this too!)

♦︎Lessons from Madame Chic by Jennifer L. Scott (C'mon, you know I had to include this in the gift guide.)

♦︎Taste of Home Christmas 465 recipes for a merry holiday (Fabulous holiday recipes... would make a great gift!)

Check out this week's video for the full chat. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Merry Christmas Message, Presentable Pajamas & More

'Tis the week of Christmas... can you believe it? I've been having so much fun catching up with visiting family members that this blog is a little bit late.

Last night I attended the LA Ballet's performance of the Nutcracker with the girls at London Sole.

It was a brilliant performance, as ever. I especially enjoyed seeing principal dancer, Allyssa Bross, as the Rose during the dance of the flowers. I got to meet Allyssa at the Santa Monica Art Walk several months ago. She charmed the audience with her beautiful dancing.

This week's video message gives you my good tidings for the season and also shows you my houseguest appropriate presentable pajamas: the Victoria's Secret Sleepover pajama. It is very common this time of year to either be a houseguest yourself or to have people staying over in your home, and it's nice to have pajamas that you'd be happy to be seen in!

I will be taking a short break from the blog in the next two weeks. I hope you have a magnificent holiday break as well.

If you'd like to join us for our next book club, don't forget to pick up The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer. We will be starting the book club discussion in late February, so there is plenty of time to read it.

Please watch this week's video to hear my holiday message to you. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of the blog, or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur.

In case you missed my three holiday hair tutorials filmed at BYUTI salon, you can find them all in my article on Huffington Post Style.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you in 2014!

My New Year's Message To You

Happy New Year 2014!

I hope you had a great holiday with your loved ones. I had such a wonderful break. I got a much needed rest and caught up with so many family members I haven't seen the whole year. It was truly fabulous.

In January 2013 we talked about the tipping point to changing how we live. No longer content with the status quo, we have gone searching for a path in life that is teeming with light and that brings us closer to who we really are.

Continuing on this path, my New Year's message to you is simple. I am focusing on this philosophy this entire year and I hope that you join in with me:

It's not what you do, but how you do it.

I'll repeat that again...

It's now what you do, but how you do it.

It's a concept that is explored in Lessons from Madame Chic, one that I will continue to explore on this blog and one that is even further discussed in my new book that will be out at the end of this year.

It's not what you do, but how you do it.

This year let's set aside the negative thinking, let's work on ourselves from the inside out and let's enjoy what we're doing, no matter what it is we are, in fact, doing. Let's change our perceptions and most important, LET'S HAVE FUN!

If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Thank you for joining me this year on the Daily Connoisseur. I just know it's going to be a great year...

Notes

♚ Thank you for all of your messages! I get dozens of reader messages a day and am not always able to respond. I read and appreciate every single one. Thank you, thank you, thank YOU!

♚ We will be starting our Untethered Soul book club in February. Be sure to pick up or check out a copy so you can join in on the discussion.

Outfit of the Day Casual Lunch

I can't believe I've been blogging for six years and this is my first outfit of the day (OOTD) post! Better late than never though, eh?

This video was shot in mid-December for a girlfriend lunch (Hi GinaMarie and Sandy!). It was a casual lunch at Fig restaurant in Santa Monica.

Outfit:

Blush silk Equipment blouse (a core item from my Ten-Item Wardrobe Fall/ Winter video)

Royal blue blazer from Banana Republic (you'll recognize this from many posts over the past few years)

Paige skinny jeans (featured in my fall/ winter Ten-Item Wardrobe video)

Camel suede Ferragamo pumps (another old favorite of mine that have lasted over 5 years now)

Long gem-stone necklace

Please keep in mind when you view these fashion videos: it is not the brand or the price of the clothing that matters. In fact, I've considered not mentioning any brands because they are not important. We all have different styles, budgets and ideas about what we'd like to wear. The purpose of these videos is to show you what one woman (me) does. They are meant to inspire, not to instruct. Most of the fun is figuring out what works for you budget-wise and style-wise.

Check out this week's video for an up close look at my outfit. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur.

And please let me know in the comments section if you enjoy these type of videos and would like to see more of them...

Bathroom Vanity Tour and Most Used Beauty Products

This week's video was shot on my iPhone. Who knows what happened, but the viewing window is very narrow. Nevermind, you still get to see what's on my vanity and I also have written it out for you on the side panels (handy, that). I have a terrible cold this week, which is why my narration sounds so nasally and subdued. But enough about the backstory... let's get into the discussion!

I tend to only keep the products I use in heavy rotation and/or the most beautiful products I have on display on my vanity. The rest goes in the drawers in the vanity or the cabinet underneath. So you will see makeup/ haircare and beauty products in this video, but those aren't the only ones I use, they just happen to be what I am currently using the most. We don't have a lot of storage in our bathroom. In fact, this vanity is all we have (no shelves, no medicine cabinet, etc.) so I have to make it work.

Please Note**This is probably the most I've ever had on top of my vanity. Half of the products shown in this video are normally stored away in my drawers but I kept them out to show you what I'm loving lately. So this is a bit of a dual-purpose blog post.

Everything in this video has been purchased by me (except for the perfume, which was a gift from Mr. Connoisseur). I am including links where necessary.

Here's what's on my vanity:

Orchids! (of course)

Various orchid pots to store makeup brushes/ tooth paste

Mason Pearson Hairbrush (Investment piece but nothing compares. I mean nothing. Let me know if you want me to do a video on mine.)

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer spf 20

Aquaphor (I have had some eczema on my hands this winter... total bummer. This helps.)

Sephora eyebrow powder in blonde

MAC Prep & Prime natural radiance base (I'm loving this primer!)

Jurlique Redness Rescue Calendula Cream (You know I love calendula. This cream is wonderful.)

YSL Top Secrets BB cream (I've tested a few BB creams... this one is my favorite by far.)

Epicuren Volcanic clay face mask

Éminence Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer (The most magnificent moisturizer ever. Is that being too dramatic?)

Éminence Clear Skin Probiotic Masque

CHANEL Perfection Lumière Foundation

NARS Dolce Vita lipstick

MAC Dazzleglass in Bare Necessity

Hourglass lipstick in Vintage

Theodent Fluoride-free toothpaste (I get this at Whole Foods.)

Balenciaga Florabotanica (A present from Mr. Connoisseur. Gorgeous scent. Perfect for spring and, dare I say it, is rivaling my beloved Stella.)

Éminence Calendula Oil (and my love affair with calendula continues...)

Living Proof Prime Style Extender(for hair)

Simple cleansing facial wipes

Ecover lavender hand soap (I love this soap!)

Voilà! If there's anything you like the look of and want to know more about, leave a comment below and I'll try to do another more in-depth beauty video discussing it.

Check out this week's video for a closer look. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur .

Over the Christmas break I posted a picture on instagram that features some rather unique lighting (no filter) courtesy of the winter Southern California sun.

Many people asked about the scarf I'm wearing in the picture, which happens to be this gorgeous pale pink Alexander McQueen scarf I received as a Christmas present from my mother and father-in-law (thank you! xx).

This week's video shows you how I pair the scarf with neutrals (and the simplicity of this outfit must work because when I wore it, I received no less than three compliments!). I also introduce you to a new sweater that has replaced my older sweaters in my fall/ winter ten-item wardrobe.

Outfit featured in this video:

Alexander McQueen Scarf
Ann Taylor Loft sweater
Paige Skyline skinny jeans
London Sole Henrietta ballet flats in nude patent

Ten-Item Wardrobe Chat

Before we jump into this week's post, I wanted to share the new author photo for my upcoming book with you. Thank you to Kevin McIntyre for another great photo shoot!

Ten-Item Wardrobe Chat

The ten-item wardrobe continues to be the most popular topic of discussion from Lessons from Madame Chic, and the questions continue to come in. Many of you are asking the same questions so I decided to do this chat video to answer the most popular ones for everyone to hear.

The first half of the video is shot in my parents' home. I had a dreadful cold (that felt like it was never going to end!) and was staying with them while I recovered. The second half of the video is shot back in Santa Monica.

Here are the topics addressed in the video:

Winter wardrobe updates I haven't purchased much since I showed you my fall/ winter ten-item wardrobe for 2013, but I do show you the the purchases (mainly tee shirts) I have made, including a lacy Zara tee that I simply adore!

Should I have a ten-item wardrobe for both work and home? This is the question I receive the most. It all depends on what you need to wear for work. If you have a drastically different dress code to what you would normally wear on your down time, you will need to have a separate work wardrobe.

Should my children have a ten-item wardrobe? This is the second most popular question I get. With the little ones it is harder to be as minimalistic because they change sizes so often (especially the baby/ toddlers) and they have so many outfit changes during the day due to dirt and spills, but yes, our kids can have a capsule wardrobe. The most important thing is to instill the values of a ten-item wardrobe in them so they don't grow up with the same shopping neurosis we did!

I also address other topics in the video such as: the ten-item wardrobe is not a diet (I like that, don't you?) and limited thinking.

Check out this week's video for the full chat. Thanks for all of your get well soon wishes on twitter. As you can see in the second half of this video, I am feeling much better!

If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Please let me know in the comments section how your ten-item wardrobe is coming along. I love to hear from you on twitter, facebook and instagram too! Use the hashtag #TenItemWardrobe to send me your pictures and/or feedback.

The Voice In Your Head: Untethered Soul Book Club Pt. 1

$

0

Our Untethered Soul book club has finally arrived! So many of you have told me you're reading this book and it is already changing your life. I'm so happy we finally get to discuss it.

I read the Untethered Soul several months ago and right around the time I finished it, my dear friend, Matt, sent me a picture of my book in Grand Central Station, NYC. I was completely delighted to see Lessons from Madame Chic sitting right next to the Untethered Soul on the table.

There are so many topics to discuss in this book, we could talk about it all year. But what I plan to do with this book club is post four videos that discuss the four topics in the book that spoke to me the most.

I want this to be an interactive book club, so please write about your thoughts in the comment section of either the blog or YouTube channel, tweet me, facebook me, instagram me or shoot your own response video or blog. I would love to hear from you.

As I started to film this first video, I realized that this book is harder to talk about than I thought. The irony of it all was that the "voice in my head" was telling me I sound completely crazy talking about this stuff! But I have decided to put myself out there and speak about it because this has really helped me and I would be thrilled if it helped even only one person (although I have a feeling it will help a great deal more than one).

This week's video is on the voice in your head.

Here are some of my favorite quotes on the subject:

*Please note, I read this on my kindle, so I have location numbers in lieu of page numbers.

Location 229True personal growth is about transcending the part of you that is not okay and needs protection.

Location 224 Reality is too real for most of us, so we temper it with the mind.

Location 184Eventually you will see that the real cause of problems is not life itself. It’s the commotion the mind makes about life that really causes problems.

Location 257 You have to break the habit of thinking that the solution to your problems is to rearrange things outside. The only permanent solution to your problems is to go inside and let go of the part of you that seems to have so many problems with reality.

Location 294You’ll be shocked by what you see. It just jumps from one subject to the next. The incessant chatter seems so neurotic that you won’t believe that it’s always been that way. But it is.

Location 881You are living on a planet spinning around the middle of outer space, and you’re either worrying about your blemishes, the scratch on your new car, or the fact that you burped in public. It’s not healthy.

For my expanded thoughts on these quotes, check out this week's video. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

If you feel intimidated by all of this, but you really do want to make a change in the way you think, I find that there is only one thing you need to do:

Acknowledge the voice in your head.

When you do this, you become aware of it. And awareness of the voice in the head is the first step toward awakening consciousness. Suddenly all of those unsettling of troublesome thoughts you have lose their power and over time will simply stop showing up.

I would love to know what you think about the voice in your head. Use the hashtag #dailyconnoisseur on your social media sites so we can all stay connected while discussing these life-changing topics, or simply leave me a comment below.

Burn and Release The Untethered Soul Book Club Pt. 2

$
0
0

Welcome to week 2 of our Untethered Soul book club: burn and release.

I'm not sure if Michael Singer actually calls this technique "burn & release", but that's my way of labeling it so that it's helpful to me. This has helped me more than any other technique in the book. Whenever I have an inner disturbance (anger, annoyance, embarrassment, etc.) rather than stuffing my feelings away or shaming myself for feeling them (Why am I feeling this way? What's wrong with me?), I now allow the emotion to be. I observe it and I allow it to pass through me. I call this burn and release because (and I've been practicing this a lot lately!) I actually feel a physical burning sensation in my heart as I process the feeling.

We're so used to stuffing and concealing our true feelings in order to contribute to our perfect facades, that those feelings are never processed. Yes, burn and release can be difficult and even painful at first, but once you get in the habit of it, you can actually look forward to confronting your true feelings, processing them and letting them go!

Michael Singer suggests that when someone says or does something that causes an inner disturbance in you to let it go immediately (process it immediately). Don't save it for later:

Location 1065“The law is very straightforward: When your stuff gets hit, let go right then because it will be harder later. It won’t be easier if you explore it or play with it, hoping to take the edge off”.

Location 1061“The stuff that holds you down periodically rears its head. When it does, let it go. You simply permit the pain to come up into your heart and pass through. If you do that, it will pass. If you are sincerely seeking truth, you’ll let go every time. This is the beginning and end of the entire path- you surrender yourself to the process of emptying yourself”.

You can actually be at peace with inner disturbance! This is true freedom. Now, what other people say and do have no power over you. You can process those feelings and deal with them in a liberating way.

Location 1486“Somebody can say something to you that can cause your heart to react and catch fire, but then it passes. It’s a temporary experience. Most people can hardly imagine what it would be like to be at peace with inner disturbance. But if you do not learn to be comfortable with it, you will devote your life to avoiding it”.

“If you feel embarrassed, it’s just a feeling. It’s just a part of creation. If you feel jealousy and your heart burns, just look at it objectively, like you would a mild bruise. It’s a thing in the universe that is passing through your system. Laugh at it, have fun with it, but don’t be afraid of it.”

Location 1529“Sometimes you will notice that it feels hot inside as pain passes. In fact, as you relax into the energy of the pain, you may feel tremendous heat in your heart. That is the pain being purified from your heart. Learn to enjoy that burning. It does not seem enjoyable, but you will learn to enjoy it because it is freeing you. In truth, pain is the price of freedom. And the moment you are willing to pay that price, you will no longer be afraid. The moment you are not afraid of the pain, you’ll be able to face all of life’s situations without fear.”

For more insights on all of this, check out this week's video. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Please join in on the book club discussion! Let us know what you think in the comments section of either the blog or YouTube channel, or tweet me, facebook me, instagram me using the hashtag #dailyconnoisseur I would love to hear from you.

Remove Your Inner Thorn Untethered Soul Book Club Pt. 3

$

Our Untethered Soul book club continues with part 3: Remove Your Inner Thorn.

Those of you who follow me on twitter and facebook know I'm going through book edits and a kitchen renovation and it is for this reason that this blog post will be lighter than the last two. So this week on the blog I am sharing my favorite quotes from this section.

Please watch this week's video (which discusses this all in depth) for the full discussion. Thank you for all of your comments and insight. I know this topic isn't what we typically discuss here on the Daily Connoisseur but as connoisseurs of life we must commit ourselves to being beautiful from the inside out :)

If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Favorite quotes on removing your inner thorn:

Location 1271“You are either trying to stop suffering, controlling your environment to avoid suffering, or worrying about suffering in the future”.

Location 1288“You don’t have to constantly be mulling over what you said or what this person thinks of you. What kind of life are you going to have if you worry about these things all the time? Inner sensitivity is a symptom of non- well-being. It’s the same as when the body sends pain or displays other symptoms when it’s not well. “

“Pain is not bad; it’s how the body talks to you. When you overeat, you get a stomachache. When you do something that puts too much stress on your arm, it starts to hurt. The body is communicating through its universal language: pain. Your psyche is communicating through its universal language: fear. Self-consciousness, jealousy, insecurity, anxiety- they are all fear.”

Location 1722“So there are two ways you can live: you can devote your life to staying in your comfort zone, or you can work on your freedom”. YES!! (that was my note when reading this quote).

Location 1341“You can wake up in the morning, look forward to the day, and not worry about what will happen. Your daily life can be like a vacation. Work can be fun; family can be fun; you can just enjoy all of it. That does not mean you don’t do your best; you just have fun doing your best. Then, at night when you go to sleep, you let it all go.”

As always, I would love to know what you think about all of this. I try to respond to every comment, so please share your experience below!

The kitchen renovation is going well but all is very hectic. I will do a blog about it when it's finished.

Also book edits are going really well. Book 2 is going to be fabulous and I just know you're going to love it.

See you next week for the final installment of the Untethered Soul book club: The Problem of the Day.

The Problem of the Day Untethered Soul Book Club Pt 4

$
0
0

We arrive at the end of our Untethered Soul book club with the problem of the day, or problem du jour as I like to call it.

There is so much more I could have talked about with this book but it would go on all year. I chose to end with the problem du jour because I think it fits nicely with the other subjects we've been talking about.

Michael Singer writes:

Location 1309“Each person has what we’ll call the ‘problem of the day’. This is the thing that is bothering them the most at any given moment. When the current problem isn’t bothering them, then the next one pops up, and when that one isn’t bothering them, the next one pops up.”

Can you relate to this? I certainly can (as you'll see in the video)...

Location 1312“Your thoughts tend to focus on what is bothering you today. Your thoughts are about the problem, why it is bothering you, and what you can do about it. If you don’t do something about this, it will go on for the rest of your life.”

Yikes!

Location 1340 “You are capable of ceasing the absurdity of listening to the perpetual problems of your psyche.”

Location 1349 “You just stop telling your mind that its job is to fix your personal problems”

Location 1359 “The Truth is, everything will be okay as soon as you are okay with everything.”

This is big.

Location 1364“By watching your mind, you will notice that it is engaged in the process of trying to make everything okay. Consciously remember that this is not what you want to do and then gently disengage. Do not fight it.”

Location 1366“Instead of fighting the mind, just don’t participate in it.”

Location 1368“The key is to be quiet. It’s not that your mind has to be quiet. You be quiet. You, the one inside watching the neurotic mind, just relax. You will then naturally fall behind the mind because you have always been there. You are not the thinking mind; you are aware of the thinking mind. You are the consciousness that is behind the mind and is aware of the thoughts.

Location 1404“Now what used to hold you down becomes what wakes you up” <-----!!! This is my favorite quote from the book! :)

Location 1541“When you are comfortable with pain passing through you, you will be free.”

Location 1992“The purpose of your life is to enjoy and learn from your experiences. You were not put on Earth to suffer. You’re not helping anybody by being miserable”.

To hear my expanded thoughts on this subject, check out this week's video. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

This week I would love to know what your thoughts are on the problem of the day...

Curling Iron Tutorial, Hair Chat & Maijan GIVEAWAY

$

This week we are exploring the world of hair. I have received a lot of requests to recreate the curls I wore in my New Year's Message video as well as an update on current hair care products I'm using. This week's video gives you both. We start with the tutorial, in which you'll note that the secret to having soft, voluminous curls (I think perhaps the Duchess of Cambridge employs this look every now and then?) is to alternate the direction of the curl with the curling iron.

Check out this week's video to see the entirety of the tutorial. If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Here is a list of the hair care products discussed in the video:

Pureology Super Smooth Shampoo

Pureology Super Smooth Conditioner

Pureology Super Smooth Relaxing Hair Masque I use this once a week or so in lieu of regular conditioner.

Maijan Pure Argan Oil & Mint Hydrating Shampoo (Amazing stuff! check out the giveaway below to win your own)

Maijan Pure Argan Oil & Mint Hydrating Conditioner The mint provides a tingling sensation shortly after applying. You feel as though you are really nourishing and cleaning the hair.

Living Proof Primer Style Extender This is a primer for your hair that, I find, makes styling last so much longer.

Pureology Colour Stylist Anti-Split Blow Dry Cream A great heat protectant to apply before blowdrying your hair.

Pureology Colour Fanatic Multi-Tasking Hair Beautifier This heat protectant is so great because you don't need to keep reapplying it if you use different forms of heat. One application and it does the job.

Mason Pearson Boar Bristle Hairbrush An investment piece, but one that makes the hair soft and smooth. It's worth saving up for one...

Giveaway
Maijan have kindly offered to give away one Pure Argan Oil & Mint Shampoo and Conditioner to a reader of the Daily Connoisseur. This giveaway is open to US residents only (apologies to my international readers, but I do not set the guidelines). Please enter via the rafflecopter widget below. The winner will be announced on the widget in one week's time and directly contacted by Maijan. Good luck!

Get Your Spring Ten-Item Wardrobe Ready

$

Before this week's post begins, check out the beautiful Slovak copy of Lessons from Madame Chic, which was sent to me by my Slovakian publisher, Ikar. What a treat! I look forward to connecting with my Slovakian readers very soon.

Spring is officially here and this week I wanted to talk about getting your spring ten-item wardrobe ready. Many of you have probably already started this. I know I have as you are expecting a video to come out very soon :)

If you have been practicing a ten-item wardrobe, this should be easy and fun for you. You already know what to do. Store away your winter items that you no longer need. Keep any sweaters or lightweight coats on hand in case the weather turns (and these days, the weather always seems to be turning!), bring out the clothes from last spring/ summer that you plan to use again this year and mend anything that needs to be mended.

At this point you should write down a list of anything you need to purchase for your spring wardrobe. (All of my readers in the southern Hemisphere who are not going into spring, you can do this for your fall wardrobe.) Keep in mind the colors you'd like to wear this season and plan what would go nicely with what you already have. Don't forget to include the "extras" (like tee shirts) and accessories on this list. Keep your list handy and your budget in mind when you're out shopping and slowly, like you're on a treasure hunt, you can tick items off your list. This part is so much fun.

Hang your items proudly in your closet and just enjoy yourself this season.

If you haven't yet started your own ten-item wardrobe, it's never too late to start. Don't be intimidated by the number TEN. Ten is just a guideline. You can have twenty core items if that works better for you. It's not about the number, it's about your fresh new mentality about your wardrobe. You have chosen to think of your capsule wardrobe as art and you have decided to not let another day go by where you aren't wearing something that is authentically you. So just start wherever you are. You are not behind. For more information on the ten-item wardrobe, check out my book, Lessons from Madame Chic.

I will be shooting my spring ten-item wardrobe video this week so it will be out soon. As you'll see in this week's video, I'm really feeling blue (in a good way). If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Le No Makeup Look Matte Makeup Tutorial

This week we are exploring "le no makeup look" with a new matte palette I recently purchased from Tarte. But, as always, you do not need to use the exact makeup I use in this video. You can most likely recreate this subtle look from the makeup you already have! All you need are some soft pink, mauve, plum or taupe matte eyeshadows and a soft pink matte blush. This is such a lovely look for when you want to look as natural as possible. No shimmer, no sparkle, just beautiful shades that blend seamlessly into your skin.

I also share a no makeup look trick of mine: to only apply mascara to the outer lashes. This gives the illusion of long lashes but looks marvelously natural at the same time. I wore this very makeup look in last week's video discussing the ten-item wardrobe. I hope you enjoy!

If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Makeup used in this video:

CHANEL perfection lumiere foundation

MAC pro longwear concealer

MAC studio finish concealer

CHANEL éclat lumiere

Sephora eyebrow editor in Honey Blonde

Urban Decay primer potion

Tarte CC Matte palette

Shu Uemura eyelash curler

CHANEL inimitable intense mascara

By Terry lip gloss in Bitten Splash

Dior Porcelaine nail polish

Stella (In the video I use Stella Sheer, but because that is limited edition and only released in the summer, I am providing the link to the original Stella here.)

For more on le no makeup look, check out my book, Lessons from Madame Chic.

FTC: all makeup featured in this video was purchased by me.

** Music in the video: Frédéric Chopin - Nocturne In F Minor, Op. 55. Copyright-free music I purchased from pond5.com

How do you like this look. Will you try it this season?

It's finally here! My spring ten-item wardrobe video. I had a lot of fun making this video, as you will see. This wardrobe will take me from now until the end of summer. It is a combination of new and old pieces (some are very old!) and I am in love with it.

This week, you can watch the video, which is set to music and is shot fashion show-style. Take notes, enjoy the show and get inspired to curate your own ten-item wardrobe. Next week's video will be a talk through of all of the pieces so you can see where I got my inspiration, identify the old and new items and understand my thought process when putting this wardrobe together.

So this week, sit back and enjoy the show! If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

Ten-Item Wardrobe Talk-Through Spring 2014 (and Stella & Dot Giveaway!)

$

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to last week's ten-item wardrobe video. My inbox has been filled with your wonderful comments and, of course, all of your questions. Because I've received so many comments and emails I am not able to individually respond to each one, but hopefully this week's video will answer many of your questions. This week's video is a talk through of the garments and shares with you my inspiration for this year's wardrobe and examines old and new pieces.

If you are unable to see the video above, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog, or check out my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur (make sure you subscribe!).

For links to every item pictured in this video, visit my original ten-item wardrobe post here.

Here are some FAQs from viewers:

Gina asks: Do you have a summer 10 item wardrobe too? Spring has begun here, but it 60 degrees. When summer begins for you, will this lovely spring collection still work for you in summer?

This wardrobe will take me to the end of summer. As summer approaches, I will probably use the sweaters less and less. I might purchase one or two items in the summer to supplement my wardrobe, or I might not. Last summer the only garment I purchased was the Anthropologie water color dress you see in this year's video, for example.

Lilly asks: I was wondering if you could tell us what is this beautiful music you have in the video? Thanks again for all the wonderful posts over the years :)

If you are ever curious about the music featured in my videos, or about any item featured in a video, always check my blog post or the info box below the YouTube video. I always credit an item when I can. If the specific item is no longer available online, I provide a link for the brand or retailer. The music in the ten-item wardrobe video is royalty-free and copyright-free music purchased from pond5.com and is called "Paris Love". Thank you Lilly!

Evaline asks: Your lip colour here is lovely for spring...would you mind sharing the name with us?

Many people asked about my lip color. The video was shot over a few days and I am wearing different lip colors in different shots. I used the Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo No. 6 in some shots and By Terry Bitten lip gloss in others.

Sara asks: Can I ask what you layer under sheer tops, like your Equipment blouses? A cami? In white, or do you try to find one that matches your skin tone? I have the worst time solving the "sheer issue."

I have several camisoles in beige, white and black. I find the beige ones that are closest to my own skintone look best under a slightly sheer blouse.

Alonememe asks: I don't really get this idea of extras. I understand when it comes to tank tops, underwear etc. - you need them to build the outfit, but having few tops that you wear as normal outfit is really having 20 or 30 core outfits. Could you please explain this? Why do you separate core items from extras? Is this more handy? :)

Core items vs. extras are a great way to organize your wardrobe. Think of your core items as telling a story and the extras accent this. The core items are the major items, the foundation that builds the wardrobe. The extras compliment the core.

For my readers in the Southern Hemisphere who are going into Fall/ Winter, check out Chic Mummy's blog. She has compiled a lovely Autumn ten-item wardrobe. Thank you Sarah!

Testimonials
Karryn S writes:

I too spent a while living in France as a student. I went there as a hippie with Birkenstocks and hair wraps, and came back...a lady. When your book was released, I devoured it, and I enjoy following your "pensees quotidiennes". Since implementing more of your concrete ideas, I've enjoyed many compliments (thank you for that!). Clutter is gone, orchids are out. Wardrobe is pared-down, as is jewelry. They seem like superficial, irrelevant things, but I have found them to be profound. Encore, merci beaucoup ma belle. N'arretez jamais!

Thank you Karryn!

Lastly, Happy Easter to all who celebrate. I hope you had a marvelous day with your family and friends. See you soon! xx

Easy, Elegant Braided Updo Tutorial & The Lost Art of Dress (Giveaway)

$
0
0

This week we are examining how we present ourselves. You know one of my mottos from Lessons from Madame Chic is "look presentable always". While this seems like a superficial goal, it is actually quite powerful. Making it our goal to look presentable every single day (whatever our best is for that day) puts out the message that we respect ourselves and the people we come in contact with. That we have the energy to put our best foot forward and that by adorning ourselves we are in our own way celebrating life.

Looking presentable should not be high-maintenance or unattainable. It should be easy and fun! Which is why I did this week's video showing you an easy, yet elegant braided updo. This tutorial is for women with medium to long hair. If you have short hair you can modify it by creating two side braids and pinning them back... play with it and find what works for you. If you are unable to see this week's video, click here, look in the sidebar of this blog or visit my channel: www.youtube.com/TheDailyConnoisseur

To continue the theme I am so happy to introduce to you The Lost Art of Dress by Linda Przybyszewski. This fascinating book explores the history (and downfall) of American dress in a witty and entertaining way. It is a book that I know many of you will love.

I was very honored to have my book blurb included on its cover:

"An invaluable resource of inspiration. The Lost Art of Dress calls us to resurrect our stylish roots and bring tasteful beauty back to our everyday routine." -Jennifer L. Scott, author of Lessons from Madame Chic

Here is the description from Amazon:

As a glance down any street in America quickly reveals, American women have forgotten how to dress. We chase fads, choose inappropriate materials and unattractive cuts, and waste energy tottering in heels when we could be moving gracefully. Quite simply, we lack the fashion know-how we need to dress professionally and flatteringly.

As historian and expert dressmaker Linda Przybyszewski reveals in The Lost Art of Dress, it wasn’t always like this. In the first half of the twentieth century, a remarkable group of women—the so-called Dress Doctors—taught American women how to stretch each yard of fabric and dress well on a budget. Knowledge not money, they insisted, is the key to timeless fashion. Based in Home Economics departments across the country, the Dress Doctors offered advice on radio shows, at women’s clubs, and in magazines. Millions of young girls read their books in school and at 4-H clothing clubs. As Przybyszewski shows, the Dress Doctors’ concerns weren’t purely superficial: they prized practicality, and empowered women to design and make clothing for both the workplace and the home. They championed skirts that would allow women to move about freely and campaigned against impractical and painful shoes. Armed with the Dress Doctors’ simple design principles—harmony, proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis—modern American women from all classes could learn to dress for all occasions in a way that made them confident, engaged members of society.

A captivating and beautifully-illustrated look at the world of the Dress Doctors, The Lost Art of Dress introduces a new audience to their timeless rules of fashion and beauty—rules which, with a little help, we can certainly learn again.

Basic Books have been kind enough to offer to give away 5 copies of The Lost Art of Dress to readers of the Daily Connoisseur! Please enter via the rafflecopter widget below. This giveaway is open to US residents only (my apologies to our international readers but I do not set these guidelines).

a Rafflecopter giveaway

The five winners will be announced on the widget and contacted directly once the giveaway is over next week.

Best of luck!

Vulgarity No More on Reality TV

$
0
0

Dear Fellow Connoisseurs,

I have been wanting to do this video for such a long time discussing the disturbing trend of violent, vulgar and crude behavior on reality TV. The straw that broke the camel's back was watching only 5 minutes of the recent Real Housewives of Atlanta Reunion Show where I got an eye-full of violence, crass language, crude gestures and copious amounts of vulgarity. And it's not just this show, it's so many Reality TV shows on the air right now.

Whether we like it or not these "stars" are inadvertent role models for our young generation of girls. Do we really want our young ladies to see this kind of behavior on television that is being billed as "reality" and think that it is acceptable? As I wrote in my Huffington Post article from last year, is vulgar really the new normal?

Well if these women on reality TV can express themselves, so can we. We need to send a message to the networks that we are tired of watching manufactured cat fights, unnecessary violence and mouthful after mouthful of vulgar language. Our young girls need positive role models: women who embody kindness, intelligence, grace and class. We need to tell our young girls that they do not need to be a negative drama queen to get ahead and get noticed, that they don't need to be jealous of other women but rather should be supporting each other, that they do not need to exploit themselves in order to attract a man. This may be the reality on television, but it is not our reality.

If you feel as passionate about this messages as I do, please share my blog post or video using the hashtag #VulgarityNoMore

And thank you for continuing to be a part of this special community of daily connoisseurs, where we can create our own reality while pursuing beauty, intelligence, expansion and elegance together.

Yours Truly,

Jennifer x
